(More customer reviews)I was using a Porter Cable 362VS to sand my hardwood floors. The heat of continuous sanding very quickly warped the steel sanding shoe that comes with the sander (within hours). Once the steel sanding shoe is warped, it pushes the belt into your work in an uneven manner. This creates a long depression in the work surface as the sander is moved, with round divots at the end of each stroke of the sander. In the case of my floors, the result was a seriously messed up surface.
This sanding shoe is a brilliant solution to the problem. It is a heavy piece of cloth with a thick layer of graphite on one side. It lays perfectly flat (provided that you keep sawdust from getting behind it or the cork pad). It completely eliminated the gouging that the steel shoe was causing.
This shoe will wear out as the graphite wears off. Mine lasted for about 20 belts before wearing through to the cloth backing in a few spots.
No instructions come with the product. This shoe replaces the steel shoe. The cork pad remains, the steel shoe is removed.
I can't say that the shoe did anything to prolong belt life. Belts lost their edge at about the same rate with the steel shoe as they do with this one. Nor does it prevent belts from getting hot. (Sanding does involve friction, of course.) But as a solution to the problem of gouging, this sanding shoe has been just wonderful. It allowed me to clean up the mess that the steel shoe created.
