I had initially debated between picking up the Dremel 395 or the B&D RTX, though latter ultimately discouraged me because of its incompatibility with a number of the Dremel attachments.
Besides its excellent price and being very solidly built, the variable speed Grizzly H6155 has the advantage of being compatible with the Dremel attachments.
This tool has a good solid, weighty feel like the "original" I had examined at hardware stores. It's one hell of a doppelganger. I suspect it was made by the same happy Chinese slaves.
What also set this kit apart for me in comparison to other generics offered in the same price range was the various attachments included, like the flexi-shaft, the "dremel-lite", and the "cutting tool attachment", in addition to the telescopic "sky hook" and clamp.
One could only wish that the Grizzly kit offered a few more bits ("accessories") to get started (a couple brushes would have been nice, and perhaps better cutting wheels); but anyone using these tools has to replenish their "accessory" supply sooner or later anyway. In addition the motor brushes are also replaceable.
So far I have routed straight 1/4 grooves on half-inch boards
(via Grizzly's "cutting" attachment, and router bits I picked up elsewhere); drilled and sanded wood edging, cut off nail heads, grounded paint off metal, cut copper-clad pcb, and so far this tool has performed remarkably well, not bogging down through all the use and abuse I've subjected it.
The "attachments" along with this tool comprises a fine starter kit and an excellent bargain. I am immensely satisfied with this purchase, and hope anyone giving this rotary kit a shot will experience the same good fortune as well.
UPDATE (3/27/07): I spoke too soon (lol).
After a couragous year & a half long battle with routing, sanding, cutting and grinding various pieces of wood, metal and plastic, Mr. H6155 Rotary Tool suddenly gave up the ghost two days ago. Efforts to resuscitate him via cleaning and new set of brushes proved to no avail.
Mr. Rotary Tool is survived by an assortment of assessories and attachments, which should work with his Dremel replacement.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Rotary Tool.
If I could, I would change the rating to this item somewhere between 2 1/2 to 3 stars. It was good while it lasted.
